Its unique approach offers solutions to the growing number of collective challenges we face. \u201cWe are not in the business of making monuments; we want to try to solve a problem,\u201d cofounder J\u00f3hann Sigur\u00f0sson says.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name Tendra is a slice of Icelandic folklore meaning \u2018to ignite\u2019 \u2013 to spark an idea or a solution. The best ideas often begin with a modest thought: a small flame, growing into a fire. Cofounder and general manager J\u00f3hann Sigur\u00f0sson elaborates: \u201cwe started in our current configuration in 2016 and operate in both Iceland and Norway. This is extremely important in today\u2019s society with its high tempo and high stress levels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He highlights a project he is particularly proud of \u2013 a cohousing project aimed at resolving rising social issues. \u201cThe average age of the population is increasing, and loneliness is growing concurrently. All parties benefit from what we call a \u2018house for generations\u2019 in which senior citizens can remain at home until old age. This allows for a flow of wisdom and information, and results in a shared workload at home. It makes a bridge; it\u2019s about building a small community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/scanmagazine.co.uk\/content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Tendra_6_Sola40femti_Tendra.jpg?w=1060&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Tendra Arkitekt\u00far offers a lot more than Icelandic folklore and functional cohousing\" class=\"wp-image-78778\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can feel the drive to create purpose in the architectural firm\u2019s clear view of the bigger picture. This means being sustainable from the outset, striving to reach the goal as efficiently and swiftly as possible. \u201cBeing a small firm in Iceland, you can\u2019t be too specialised,\u201d says Sigur\u00f0sson. \u201cWe do a lot of residential work, offices, schools and kindergartens, and lately we have been designing shelters for women and for orphaned children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/scanmagazine.co.uk\/content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Tendra_8_Sola40femti_Tendra.jpg?w=1060&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Tendra Arkitekt\u00far offers a lot more than Icelandic folklore and functional cohousing\" class=\"wp-image-78779\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, every context requires a different solution. This means taking into account the surroundings, whether it is nature or neighbours. \u201cWe take all factors into consideration \u2013 the wind, sun, view \u2013 while creating spaces for human beings. Those are the things that shape our buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspiration comes from diverse sources, from scrolling Instagram to the felt effect of everyday environments. \u201cHonest architecture that doesn\u00b4t try to pretend to be something it isn\u2019t,\u201d he states, adding, \u201cso, no Potemkin villages. This is a defining approach for the Icelandic firm, making sure nothing \u2013 or as little as possible \u2013 goes to waste. Photo: \u00a9Nanne Springer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve recently created a building almost entirely made from repurposed and recycled materials,\u201d says Sigur\u00f0sson. \u201cNow we are working on a BREEAM certified office building and an apartment complex, certified with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. Those will be ready this year. And there are more \u2018green buildings\u2019 in the early stages of design.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The future is all about an increased focus on sustainability. And not just for likes on social media. Sigur\u00f0sson points out ways to achieve this. Building materials need to become more eco-friendly and the construction sector needs to improve in repurposing buildings and material. \u201cAnother thing is what we create with those resources. We need to reduce waste, and we need to create the right number of houses in the right dimensions and in the right areas.
